Heather’s Waltz

~ for Heather ~

she swirls about the room
epitome of grace
a flower in full bloom

like visual perfume
she does my heart embrace
she swirls about the room

she’s gorgeous in costume
with gossamer and lace
a flower in full bloom

her joy does me consume
and brighten up my face
she swirls about the room

sometimes she’ll really zoom
trace flowing arcs through space
a flower in full bloom

when music does resume
and lighten up the place
she swirls about the room
a flower in full bloom

– Paul Raworth Bennett

Technical notes: This villanelle‘s meter is iambic trimeter, with each of the three “da-DA” feet in every line corresponding to a step in the waltz. Furthermore, the tercet (three-line stanza) structure also suggests the waltz rhythm, and the use of repeated lines – a villanelle hallmark – reflects the repetitive nature of dance in general.
